History of the Parish of Ovens

The Parish of Ovens (from the Irish na hUamhanna, meaning “caves”), is the union of the ancient parishes of Athnowen, Desertmore and Aglish.

Athnowen was the original name of the parish and it means the ford of the river (of the nearby river Bride).
